The Grand Canyon

Canyon Panorama from Desert View

Up Grand Canyon Village Desert View

The Grand Canyon was the first stop of our vacation.  The amazing thing about approaching the canyon is that there is no natural tell-tale sign or warning that a 1 mile deep hole is up ahead.  You just drive up the road and there it is.  It took us about 4 ½ hours to get to the park's entrance from the Phoenix Airport.  We stayed in the Yavapai Lodge located in the Grand Canyon Village at the Market Plaza on the south rim of the canyon.

If you ever plan to stay at this lodge don't expect extravagant accommodations.  All of the lodging within the National Park is run by the park service and the lodge room we had was old, sparse, and a bit run down.  Although the rooms left something to be desired, the cafeteria was very good.  There was a wide variety of food offered and it had a ski-lodge like ambiance.  In the future, I would recommend staying at Bright Angel or El Tovar (they looked pretty nice).

The cost to enter the park is $20 per car.  This pass allows you to enter and exit the park freely for one full week.  When we arrived our first stop was Mather Point and the Visitor's Center.  We took a few pictures but didn't stay there too long since park services recommended we travel east to Desert View to catch the spectacular sunset.  They were right.  As you'll see from the pictures, it was pretty spectacular.  The next morning and afternoon was equally amazing.  We went west to the Bright Angel Trailhead and descended into the canyon about 3/4 of a mile before exiting the park.  Before heading to Sedona we had to stop and see the IMAX presentation of the Grand Canyon just outside the park.  The film did a pretty good job of capturing the 'bigness' of the canyon so we bought the DVD.  If you every want to watch it, let me know.
