Bright Angel

Up Mather Point Bright Angel

At first, we weren't going to hike down into the canyon thinking it would be too dangerous.  However, once arriving at the Bright Angel Trailhead and comparing a canyon hike to a rim hike, we decided to give the canyon hike a try.  We ended up hiking about 3/4 of a mile down into the canyon.  This sounds far but it really wasn't.  Since the canyon trails wind down (switchback) we only descended about 750 feet.

One thing for sure, if we come back, we're going to hike to the bottom because it was just too cool.  Below are some of the pictures from this canyon vantage point.

View at the Bright Angel Trailhead

Ride down the canyon on a mule?

This mule has seen the canyon dozens of times. No way you'll catch me on this thing.

Telephoto shot of the mule train on the Bright Angel trail.

Check out the next shot to see how far they really were.

Can you see the mule trains from here?

This is the same shot as the one to the left except with no magnification. We walked 30 minutes further into the canyon than where you see these mules.

Around the first bend of the Bright Angel Trail

Thought I'd catch a shot to capture some perspective on the size of the canyon.

Trail in the distance

If you look very closely you'll see a trail heading across the plateau in the distance. At the end of the trail is a cliff-side view of the Colorado River.

A wider section of the trail

We stopped here on the trail to look over the edge and get some pictures.

This is what the trail was like

Smooth in some areas with some embedded rocks and logs to provide a little more traction.

Can you see Susan in this picture?

I walked a little further down the trail to get a shot of Susan with the canyon in the background. She is in the top left corner.

Rock formation in the middle of the canyon.

I took this with my telephoto lens. The lens gives a little bit of edge effect and narrows the field of view. It's still a pretty good shot.

One of the rare shots of Susan and I together.
